Raa Atoll Guide
Raa is located 140 kilometers from the city of Male. Until the 90s, this atoll was closed to tourists, and only after some time it began to develop as a tourist center.
It consists of fifteen islands, and all of them are inhabited. The local population mainly works in the tourism sector, but there is also a fishing fleet here, which, by the way, is the largest in the Maldives.
The main occupation of tourists on Raa Atoll is, in addition to relaxing on the beach, diving. Recommended diving sites are Milaidhoo Reef, Kakani Thila, Madi Finolhu and Digali Haa.
Resting on Raa Atoll, you will have the opportunity to go on a boat trip to Alifushi Island, where you can see with your own eyes how local craftsmen make dhoni boats.
Each hotel on Raa Atoll has restaurants serving not only Maldivian, but also European and North American cuisines. In the villages there are also small taverns where you can have a bite to eat.
There are also small souvenir shops in the hotels where you can buy such interesting items as shark teeth, shell bracelets, models of dhoni boats and other beautiful souvenirs made from seafood.

Flights Chișinău / Bucharest – Malé and access to Raa Atoll
Packages to Maldives (Raa Atoll) can be booked both online and in Admiral.Travel offices. We combine convenient flights from Chișinău and Bucharest with guaranteed seaplane transfers so that your journey to the island is as smooth as possible. Typical stays are 7–14 nights, and for every package we carefully check flight schedules and connections with the seaplane timetable. For more information about the country and resorts, visit our dedicated Maldives page.
```The flight Chișinău – Malé or Bucharest – Malé is convenient and good value for money, but please take into account that flights to this destination are not direct, only with a stopover.
The most comfortable option is with Turkish Airlines flights, where meals are included on board. If the stopover in Istanbul is delayed, you are offered a meal. If the layover lasts more than eight hours, you are also offered a hotel room. However, based on experience and practice, Turkish Airlines aircraft fly quite frequently, so there are practically no very long layovers.
The total flight duration is about 11–12 hours.
In addition, from Bucharest there are flights operated by airlines such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, Air France and Condor Airlines. The last one is not very comfortable, but meals are provided on board and checked baggage is included in the price — a decent service overall.
The cheapest low-cost airlines
Flydubai flies from Bucharest with a stopover in Dubai. Ticket prices are more attractive, but meals are not included on board, and only hand luggage is included in the price. Checked baggage is paid separately. Connections are relatively good, and the layover does not last long.
Wizz Air flies from Bucharest with a stopover in Abu Dhabi or Dubai. This is the cheapest option, but with disadvantages: there is no meal service on board and layovers can be long – up to 24 hours. It is suitable for those who want to see new and interesting places in the United Arab Emirates.
Upon arrival, you can reach Raa Atoll by seaplane. When you book the tour with our agency, we guarantee you will be met at the airport and have access to the seaplane that takes you to the hotel. All this is included in the cost of the tour package.
If you are travelling on your own, you can use the services of local airlines that operate flights to the island – Trans Maldivian Airways and Maldivian Seaplane.
For short tourist stays, most travellers do not need to obtain a visa in advance. A free tourist visa for up to 30 days is normally issued on arrival in Malé, provided you have a valid passport, a return ticket and confirmed accommodation. We recommend checking the latest entry rules before your trip.
What baggage is usually included in the flight ticket?
Full-service airlines such as Turkish Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways and Air France usually include checked baggage, hand luggage and in-flight meals. Is the Maldives a good destination for children?
Yes, many Maldives resorts are very family-friendly. They offer family rooms, kids’ pools, kids’ clubs, special menus and shallow, gently sloping beaches. On Raa Atoll you will find excellent options both for families with small children and for teenagers, with safe and supervised water activities.
Which meal plan is better – Half Board or All Inclusive?
The most popular option is Half Board (breakfast + dinner), ideal if you spend the day on the beach or on excursions. For families or those who want to control their budget more easily, All Inclusive is an excellent choice.
What if it rains for a few days in the Maldives?
Even when it rains, the temperature remains warm and showers are often short. Resorts offer plenty of indoor activities: spa and massage, gym, cooking classes, games and entertainment. When the sea allows, you can still enjoy snorkelling or water sports between showers.
How do I pay on the island and which currency is used?
In most resorts you can pay with Visa and MasterCard. Prices are usually shown and charged in US dollars (USD), while the local currency is the Maldivian rufiyaa. It is useful to have some cash for tips and small personal expenses.
What about internet access and mobile SIM cards?
Most resorts offer free Wi-Fi in rooms and public areas, good enough for social media and calls. At Malé airport you can also buy a local SIM card with mobile data, which is very handy if you want to stay online during transfers and excursions.
What snorkelling and diving options are there on Raa Atoll?
Raa Atoll is famous for its rich marine life. Resorts organise guided snorkelling trips, boat tours to see turtles and dolphins, as well as dive excursions. On-site dive centres welcome both certified divers and beginners who want to take their first courses.
Which excursions and activities are most popular?
Popular activities include sunset cruises, fishing trips, visits to local islands, dolphin-watching, picnics on uninhabited islands, romantic dinners on the beach and professional photo shoots. Most of these can be booked directly through your resort.
Is travel medical insurance mandatory for the Maldives?
Insurance is not always a formal requirement, but it is strongly recommended. Medical care on remote islands can be expensive, and a good policy helps cover emergency treatment, medical transport and other unexpected situations.
