Lake Balaton

Lake Balaton is located in the western part of Hungary and is the largest lake in the country and in Central Europe. This body of water is often called the “Hungarian Sea”. Its relative depth is not great — about 3,6 meters, yet it is crossed by ships, and industrial fishing is practiced.

A resort has been developed around the lake, popular with tourists not only from neighboring countries, but also from other states, and not only European ones. Lake Balaton is an extraordinary place for an active family vacation. Fishing, surfing, rowing, and water skiing are allowed. In addition, the resort is favorable for health recovery; Balaton is also a spa resort.

Because of its small depth, during the summer months the water warms up quickly and its temperature reaches +26 degrees Celsius. The southern shore of the lake has sandy beaches, where many people spend their time. The northern shore is famous for its beautiful landscapes — mountain ranges, gardens, and vineyards. Travelers are also attracted by the ruins of old fortresses, preserved to this day.

The calling card of Lake Balaton is the Tihany Peninsula. Interestingly, the peninsula also has two lakes — an inner and an outer one, both with a small depth, surrounded by geysers and reeds.

In Tihany there is a Benedictine abbey. It is the oldest monastery in Hungary, built in the XI century. 

When talking about the attractions of Lake Balaton, we should mention not only the picturesque places, historical monuments, and the medical resort, but also the excursions that take place. These are unique wine and gastronomy routes that allow tourists to visit cellars and exceptional restaurants.
