Cancun – keeper of the ancient secrets of the Maya civilization
The vanished Maya civilization that once lived around Cancun left behind many mysteries that have not been fully understood to this day. That’s why, to feel the spirit of historical secrets, tourists are advised to visit the sacred city of Chichen Itza, located three hours from Cancun. Here you’ll find a true open-air museum – an ancient city whose structures have been well preserved to our days. The complex’s main highlights deserve special attention – the Kukulkan Pyramid, the Temple of the Warriors of Chichen Itza, as well as a fifty-meter well intended for sacrifices. The ancient Maya observatory and the ball game stadium are also open to visitors.
Two hours from Cancun lies the town of Tulum, which is just as popular among tourists.
Isla Mujeres, just 10 minutes from Cancun, is famous for the fact that its surface is “scattered” with statues of goddesses worshiped by ancient tribes. There is a park here that will shelter the tired traveler from the bustle of resort areas. Diving clubs and the famous turtle farm are also found here. For gourmets, a wide range of local cuisine opens up, and finally, tourists can buy various souvenirs.
It is worth noting an amazing attraction in the waters around Isla Mujeres – the underwater sculpture museum. Hundreds of stone figures are scattered across the seabed near the coast. The author of the project is sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor. The artist’s idea was to hint at the inseparable unity of humans and nature, while also drawing attention to the problem of ecology and ocean pollution.
Lastly, it’s worth mentioning the flavor of the local cuisine. Local dishes are well known to tourists from all over the world. Residents include plenty of meat and legumes in their meals, seasoning food with hot chili pepper. The taste of the delicacies is truly vibrant and memorable. The basic rule of local cooks – food must satisfy you. Even breakfast starts with protein – fried eggs with meat.

Frequently asked questions about holidays in Cancun
When is the best time of year to visit Cancun?
The main high season in Cancun is generally from December to April, when the weather is drier and daytime temperatures are pleasantly warm. The rest of the year you can expect short tropical showers and higher humidity, but prices are often more attractive. Many travellers choose the period from late November up to around Easter for a good balance of weather and budget.
How long does it take to fly to Cancun from Chișinău or Bucharest?
Including layovers, the journey usually takes about 16 to 18 hours, depending on the route and connection times. It is wise to allow a comfortable buffer between flights, especially if you combine low-cost tickets with regular airline tickets. An Admiral.Travel consultant can help you select connections that are as convenient and stress-free as possible.
What can I do if it rains for a few days during my stay?
Tropical showers in Cancun are usually short, but if you have a few days of unsettled weather you can still enjoy spa treatments, indoor pools, shopping malls and aquariums. Cultural excursions to Mayan sites such as Chichén Itzá or Tulum are also a good idea, as the temperature remains pleasant even with cloudier skies. Our team can suggest backup plans based on the forecast for your exact travel dates.
Is Cancun a good choice for a family holiday with children?
Yes, Cancun is very family friendly. Many resorts offer kids' clubs, water slides, children's pools and special menus for younger guests. All-inclusive hotels typically have entertainment teams and activities for different age groups, so parents can relax while children are busy in a safe environment. At Admiral.Travel we recommend family resorts that have been tested and positively reviewed by our community.
Do I need a visa for Mexico if I am a citizen of Romania, Moldova, Ukraine or Russia?
Visa rules for Mexico depend on your passport and can change over time. Some nationalities can travel with a valid passport and standard tourist documents only, while others need a visa or an electronic travel authorisation. The safest option is to check the latest requirements on the official website of the Embassy of Mexico or ask your Admiral.Travel consultant before booking.
How do I get from Cancun airport to my hotel?
From Cancun Airport you can take ADO buses to downtown, use a pre-booked shared or private transfer arranged through your tour operator, or take a licensed taxi. For many Admiral.Travel packages we include a group transfer from the airport to your hotel, so you do not have to worry about transport on arrival.
What type of power sockets are used in Mexico and do I need an adapter?
Cancun, like the rest of Mexico, mainly uses North American style sockets with two flat pins. In most cases you will need an adapter for European plugs. We recommend bringing a universal travel adapter and, if you have several devices, a small extension lead so you can charge everything comfortably.
Is it better to pay by card or in cash in Cancun?
Hotels, shopping malls and many tourist restaurants in Cancun widely accept credit and debit cards, especially Visa and Mastercard. For tips, local markets, small shops and public transport it is useful to have some cash in Mexican pesos. A practical approach is to pay larger expenses by card and keep a reasonable amount of local currency for everyday purchases.
What is the internet like in Cancun and should I get a local SIM card?
Most hotels in Cancun provide free Wi-Fi in the lobby and rooms, and in many modern resorts you will also have coverage by the pool and on the beach. If you need stable internet when you are out exploring, you can buy a local SIM card from a major operator or use an international eSIM with data. When you book, we can advise you on the best option for the length of your stay.
What is usually included in an all inclusive package in Cancun?
Typically, all inclusive in Cancun covers three main buffet meals per day, snacks between meals, local alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, access to pools, daily entertainment and some non-motorised water sports. Premium services such as à la carte restaurants, imported drinks or spa treatments may be at extra cost. In your Admiral.Travel offer you will see clearly what is included at each hotel.
Can I do snorkeling or scuba diving in Cancun?
Yes, Cancun and the wider Riviera Maya region are excellent for both snorkeling and scuba diving, with warm water, coral reefs, colourful tropical fish and impressive cenotes. You can join day trips with equipment included or book certified dive centres for full dive courses and guided dives. On request, we can add such excursions directly to your package or recommend trusted partners.
Which optional excursions are most popular in Cancun?
Popular excursions include visits to Chichén Itzá, Tulum and Coba, eco-parks such as Xcaret and Xel-Há, swimming with turtles in Akumal and catamaran cruises to Isla Mujeres.
