Rasnov is a small town located between Wallachia and Transylvania. The city was formed precisely due to the construction of a fortress in this place by the knights of the Teutonic Order. The fortress was intended for the peasants so that they could take refuge in it during long sieges.
The Rasnov Fortress covers an area of about 3.5 thousand square kilometers, there are two bastions and nine watchtowers. The courtyard was landscaped for storing weapons and food, and cattle walked along it.
In the entire history of the existence of the Ryshnov fortress, it was captured only once, and this is due to its favorable location. It was possible to get inside the fortress only from the south side, where the road was located, and it was surrounded by a deep moat, at the bottom of which sharp stakes were installed.
Rasnov Fortress itself is small, behind its walls there is a church and a school, several buildings. The setting is reminiscent of a small village. The walls of the fortress are about five meters high.
This place is interesting because here is the deepest well in Transylvania. According to legend, it was dug by prisoners who were promised to save their lives for this, but in the end they were still put to death. On the walls of the well, they left inscriptions that are lines of prayers from the Koran.
Here is also the highest watchtower with an observation deck - climbing it, you can admire the unique view of the city and its surroundings. In good weather, you can even see Mount Kodlya from here, which is quite far from this place.
For some time, no attention was paid to the Ryshnov fortress, but later it was restored. Currently, there is an open-air museum here, where a tourist can come and see a lot of interesting things. For example, ancient coins and weapons, furniture, etc. are exhibited here as exhibits.
You can get to Rasnov by train from Brasov to Zarnesti, or by bus. There are also group tours to the fortress, thanks to which you can learn a lot of interesting things about this building. During the summer months, the Rasnov Fortress is open from 9.00 to 19.00, in winter from 9.00 to 17.00. The visit to the museum is paid.
