How to get there

How to get to Austria for your winter ski holiday

You can book your winter tour to Austria with Admiral Travel either in our Chișinău offices or online on our dedicated Austria page. Depending on the season and your comfort level, we can combine a flight, train, coach, or self-drive so that the journey fits both your schedule and your budget.

For guests travelling from Moldova, the most popular routes are by personal car, by plane to Innsbruck with onward train to Sankt Anton, or by long-distance coach combined with European trains. Below you can see the main options with approximate travel time and costs so you can choose the one that suits you best.

- When booking a winter tour to Austria, travellers often choose an individual trip by car; in this case you need to drive about 1,905 km. The duration of the journey is around 21 hours, with estimated fuel expenses of 400 – 500 $ for petrol. Please keep in mind that in the resort town the parking areas are small and expensive (that is why some people leave their car in the suburbs). In addition, the motorways are often blocked because of heavy snowfall.

- The most time-efficient option for travelling from Chișinău is a flight to Innsbruck and then a train ride to Sankt Anton (about 11 hours in total, from 200 to 550 $).

- The cheapest option is by bus to Verona and then by train with two changes (around 32 hours, 120-200 $).

- You can also travel entirely by train with changes in Bucharest and Budapest (about 39 hours, 160-200 $), or take a bus to a railway station in Romania and then continue your journey by train with several connections.

Whichever route you choose, Admiral Travel consultants will help you match flight, train and coach schedules so that you arrive at the resort as comfortably as possible.

Frequently asked questions about winter tours to Austria

What is the fastest way to get from Chișinău to Austria for a winter tour?

The most time-efficient option is a flight from Chișinău to Innsbruck and then a train to Sankt Anton (around 11 hours in total, depending on connections). This route significantly shortens the journey and gets you to the slopes faster.

Which travel option is the most budget-friendly?

The cheapest option is usually the combination of a coach trip to Verona and then trains with two changes (about 32 hours, 120–200 $). The journey takes longer, but it allows you to save a substantial amount on transport.

Can I drive to Austria with my own car in winter?

Yes, many travellers choose to drive their own car (about 1,905 km and 21 hours on the road). Just factor in fuel costs, motorway tolls, small and expensive parking in resort towns, and the risk of temporary road closures due to snow.

What happens if the motorways are closed because of snow?

In the Alpine winter season, certain stretches of road may be closed temporarily for snow clearing. They are usually reopened within a few hours, and transport companies adjust their schedules. Admiral Travel will assist you with up-to-date information and alternative solutions if delays occur.

Do I need a visa to travel to Austria?

Austria is a Schengen country. Citizens of EU member states generally do not need a visa for short tourist stays. Travellers from non-EU countries need a valid Schengen visa, and entry rules depend on your citizenship, so they should be checked in advance.

What kind of medical insurance is recommended for a ski holiday?

For ski trips to Austria we recommend travel medical insurance with a winter sports option. This covers emergency medical care, injuries on the slopes and, in some cases, the cost of rescue and evacuation services.

Can I rely only on bank cards, or should I bring cash as well?

Most hotels, restaurants and shops accept bank cards. Still, it is useful to carry a small amount of cash in euros for mountain huts, kiosks or local taxes that are sometimes payable only in cash.

Is this type of tour suitable for children and families?

Yes, many Austrian resorts are very family-friendly, with ski schools for children, gentle slopes, snow play areas and indoor pools. Your Admiral Travel consultant will recommend resorts and hotels with the right facilities for families.

What is internet and mobile coverage like around Sankt Anton?

Popular Austrian ski resorts, including the Sankt Anton area, generally have good mobile coverage. Most hotels and cafés offer Wi-Fi. You can use roaming or buy a local SIM card for cheaper mobile data.

What can I do if I do not ski or if the weather is bad?

Austrian resorts offer SPA centres, pools, walks around the resort, restaurants, bars with live music, ice rinks and excursions to nearby towns. Admiral Travel specialists can suggest activities based on your chosen resort and interests.

What should I know about luggage and ski equipment?

Each airline has its own rules for checked baggage and sports equipment. Skis and snowboards are usually registered as a separate piece of luggage. Your Admiral Travel consultant will help you choose the fare that works best for your number of bags and equipment.

When is the best time to go to Austria for skiing?

The main ski season in Austria usually runs from December to March. Peak demand is during Christmas, New Year and school holidays, while January and early March often offer quieter slopes and more attractive prices.
