Travel Guide to Budva
Budva is a town in Montenegro, located on the Adriatic Sea coast. Budva is the most popular and renowned resort in Montenegro, surrounded by mountains and covered with shrubs.
The climate here is pleasant: summers are warm and winters are mild. Many beaches in Budva have been awarded the Blue Flag, which highlights their cleanliness. The swimming season starts in May and ends in mid-autumn. The warmest months in Budva are July and August; during this period, the sea warms up to +26 degrees Celsius.
While in Budva, you can enjoy not only a beach holiday, but also pleasant walks—for example, through the old town, made up of winding streets, small squares, and ancient monuments.
We recommend visiting the Citadel in the old town, which hosts the Church of St. Mary. It was first mentioned in 1425, having been built to protect the town from attacks coming from the sea.
Don’t miss one of Budva’s main symbols—the statue of a dancer. It is said this monument was erected in honor of a ballerina who once fell from a cliff. Others claim she is the bride of a sailor, who eagerly awaited her beloved’s return.
The largest church in Budva is the Church of St. John. It was built in the 12th century. Today, this church houses the icon of the Madonna, which also dates back to the 12th century.
There are several more churches in Budva, as well as the Podmaine Monastery. You can also visit the island of Sveti Stefan, once a fishermen’s village and now a prestigious seaside resort, with beaches scattered with pink pebbles, washed by the gentle and crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic Sea.
- Stari Grad (Old Town) — for historic vibes, evening strolls, and quick access to restaurants, the marina, and the promenade.
- Slovenska Obala / promenade — the “central” option: beach at your doorstep, hotels for every budget, and lots of energy in season.
- Town center (shopping area) — ideal if you want stores, cafés, bus stops, and easy access to all beaches.
- Bečići — a calmer pick and great for families, with a long beach and resort-style hotels.
- Rafailovići — a small seaside area next to Bečići, with coves, promenades, and seafood taverns—perfect for a relaxed pace.
- Jaz / coastal outskirts — for more space, wider beaches, and a freer vibe, great if you want to mix Budva with nature-focused day trips.
Budva Guide
Local SIM: you can buy prepaid SIM cards at the airport, in supermarkets, and at operator stores. For a typical trip, look for 10–20 GB packs (usually around 10–20 €, depending on the operator and season).
Transfer / transport: the most commonly used airports are Tivat (TIV) and Podgorica (TGD). From Tivat, it’s a quick ride by taxi/transfer or regional buses; from Podgorica the trip is longer, but there are regular routes to the Budva Riviera. In town, it’s easy to get around via coastal local buses, taxis (confirm the fare in advance), and on foot in central areas.
Center, shopping streets & promenade: for shopping and going out, aim for the center and the Slovenska Obala promenade; evenings get especially lively, particularly in July–August.
Beaches / tourist areas: for an easy “walkable” option you have Slovenska Plaža and the promenades; for scenic views close to town — Mogren; for space and landscapes — Jaz; for a long beach and comfort — Bečići; for coves and clear water — Rafailovići and Kamenovo; near the Old Town you’ll also find small beaches—perfect for a quick swim between walks.
Safety & health: Budva is generally a safe tourist destination, but keep an eye on belongings in crowded areas and on the beach. A useful medical point is Dom zdravlja Budva (the local health center). For more complex cases, hospitals in nearby towns are often used (for example, the Kotor or Bar area, depending on the situation).
Emergency number: Montenegro uses 112 (single emergency number).
Main highlights…
- Sea & activities — varied beaches (from coves to long stretches), boat trips along the coast, and beautiful sunsets on the promenades.
- Prices / budget — peak season (July–August) is pricier; May–June and September often offer a better value/comfort balance.
- Atmosphere — a mix of romantic Old Town charm, resort areas for downtime, and strong nightlife in Budva (especially in summer).
- Food & wine — seafood on the coast, pastries/“burek”, Balkan dishes, and local wines for slow, relaxed evenings.
