This is the main question for everyone looking at Budva or Bečići for a beach holiday. And this is where we have an anti-myth to address.

Bečići Beach — not a postcard-perfect sandy paradise

Bečići Beach stretches for 2 kilometres, and that is genuinely impressive. But if you are expecting soft, fine sand like in Ulcinj, — you will be disappointed. The surface here is a combination of coarse sand and fine gravel. In some areas, gravel predominates, especially closer to the water. The entry into the sea is gradual — a child can walk 5-7 metres into the water, and it will reach about waist height. This is an advantage. The beach is wide: in the central section, it reaches up to 40 metres from the shore to the promenade. Sun loungers are arranged in 2-3 rows, rather than 5-6, as on Slovenska Plaža.

At 11:00 in the morning on 4 August 2026, we counted approximately 65% of the sun loungers occupied in the central part of the beach. It is not a “deserted beach”, but there is enough space. The price for a set (2 sun loungers + umbrella) is 15 EUR.

Slovenska Plaža — crowded, but convenient

Budva's main beach — Slovenska Plaža — is 5 times shorter than the one in Bečići. The same 380 metres, but in high season it is genuinely crowded here. Sun loungers are placed very close together, and access to the water is narrow. On the other hand, the surface is sandier than in Bečići, while the infrastructure is more extensive: water slides, bars, and jet-ski rentals right by the shore.

Mogren — Budva's wild bonus

This is an advantage that Bečići does not have. Mogren 1 and Mogren 2 — two picturesque beaches located 10 minutes on foot from the Old Town, along a path above the cliffs. The surface consists of gravel and sand, the water is turquoise, and there are few sun loungers. Access is via a footpath and is not suitable for strollers. But for couples and lovers of secluded coves with a distinctive atmosphere, this is an argument in favour of Budva.

Atmosphere, noise and nightlife: tranquillity by day and energy in the evening

Budva's Old Town does not sleep. In the summer of 2026, music from the promenade can be heard until 01:00–02:00, while bars inside the fortress walls stay open until the last customer leaves. Njegoševa Street is the main restaurant artery, where live music can be heard until midnight. If your apartment has windows facing the promenade or Njegoševa, you will live at this pace, whether you like it or not.

But Budva is not uniform. The area behind the Old Town, above the Adriatic road — is quiet and green, with ordinary residential buildings. You will not hear nightclubs there. The price you pay is the uphill walk and 15-20 minutes to the beach on foot.

Bečići: after 23:00 — quiet

Bečići is a resort that goes to sleep. The promenade is illuminated, restaurants are open, but there are no mass nightclubs or bars with loud music here. Couples stroll with pushchairs, children ride scooters. If your scenario is a glass of wine on the balcony in the evening, with a sea view and the sound of waves rather than bass, — then Bečići is the right choice. Hotels such as “Splendid” or “Mediteran” offer evening lobby bars with live music, but it ends at 23:00 and cannot be heard outside the lobby.

Attractions and walks: from the fortress walls to the promenade

Budva: history beneath your feet

In Budva, you feel like you are living in a postcard. Old Town (Stari Grad) — is a labyrinth of cobbled streets, the 7th-century Church of St. John, and the Citadel with panoramic views of St. Nicholas Island. Entrance to the Old Town is free, and you can stroll there every evening. In the summer of 2026, concerts are held every Wednesday and Friday in Poets' Square — posters are displayed at the entrance to the Citadel.

Bečići: the promenade and the hilltop church

The main promenade in Bečići is the seafront promenade. It stretches for 2 kilometres from the “Splendid” hotel to Rafailovići — a small fishing village with several excellent seafood restaurants. In the evening, it is an ideal place for a run or a stroll with a pushchair: the surface is even and the lighting is bright.

The main attraction in Bečići is St. Thomas Church on the hill above the coast. The climb is steep and takes 20 minutes, but the view of the Budva Riviera from the platform in front of the church is one of the most beautiful on the coast. Staying in Bečići, you are 3.5 kilometres from the gates of Budva Old Town — meaning the region's main historical centre is accessible on foot or within 5 minutes by bus.

Family holidays with children: the way to the sea, shade and evening tranquillity

Bečići — the default choice for children up to 7-8 years old

Bečići Beach has the advantage over Budva in three criteria that are important for children:

1. Water entry. It is gradual, with no sudden changes in depth. A child will not suddenly step into a deep spot after just a few steps.
2. Beach width. There is an area between the sun loungers and the water where children can build castles out of gravel and sand without blocking the way.
3. Promenade. It is straight, step-free, and approximately 4 metres wide. A pushchair moves easily, and a child on a scooter is less likely to bump into passers-by.

In the evening, after 22:00, the promenade in Bečići is quiet. You will be able to put your child to sleep without being startled by the sound of bass.

When Budva is also a good choice

If your child is 9-12 years old, Budva may be a more interesting choice. The water slides on Slovenska Plaža, walks through the Old Town with ice cream, and children's entertainers at large hotels (Avala Resort, Iberostar Slavija) — provide an active programme for every day. The downside — crowds on the beach and noise in the evening.

Transport and distances: exact route and travel time

On foot from “Splendid” (Bečići) to the gates of Budva Old Town

This is one of the most frequently asked questions — we walked the route and timed it.

Route checkpoints (3.2 km):

• 0 minutes, start: Exit the lobby of the “Splendid” hotel towards the promenade.
• 3 minutes: Cross the bridge over the Bečićica River. The pavement is flat and paved.
• 12 minutes: Pass the “Mediteran” hotel and reach the section of the promenade along the waterfront. Here the pavement narrows to 2 metres, but remains flat.
• 25 minutes: Reach the Budva boundary — landmark: the Dancer statue. The route continues along the road, with the pavement separated by a kerb, and a pushchair can pass.
• 35 minutes, final: You are at the gates of the Old Town (from the direction of Richardova Glava Beach).

Total time: 35 minutes at a relaxed pace. With a pushchair — 40 minutes. During the hottest part of the day (12:00–16:00), the route is difficult due to exposed sections without shade. We recommend travelling before 10:00 or after 18:00.

Alternatives

• Bus: the stop is opposite the “Splendid” hotel, on the Budva–Bečići–Rafailovići route. The interval is 15-20 minutes, the fare — €1.5. The journey takes 5-7 minutes to the Budva bus station, followed by another 5 minutes on foot to the Old Town.
• Taxi: €3–5, arriving within 2-3 minutes via the TeslaGo app (a local equivalent of Uber). During peak traffic hours (17:00–19:00), the taxi ride can take 15 minutes.
• Car rental: makes sense if you are planning excursions outside the Budva Riviera. For trips between Budva and Bečići, a car is not necessary.

   Everything — the beach, Old Town, bus station, and market — is within a maximum 15-minute walk.

   In Bečići, you will depend on the bus or taxi for any activity beyond the beach.

   Budva's beaches in August are a compromise between comfortable water entry and crowds. Bečići wins when all factors are considered together.

   Buses to Kotor, Cetinje, and Lovćen depart from Budva.

   You can explore a new part of the Old Town every evening. Bečići is suitable for a beach day, but in the evening there is only one route — the promenade.
