The benefits and features of a beach holiday in Crete
Crete, as we have already said, is washed by three seas — the Mediterranean, the Ionian, and the Aegean. The island’s climate is Mediterranean, the sea warms up quite quickly, so already in mid-April you can see the first swimmers here. We can say that the official swimming season in Crete opens in mid-April and ends around mid-November.
It is believed that the best time for a holiday in Crete is June–September. If you plan to go to Crete with children, it is better to do so in June, when the water has already warmed up enough and the sun is not yet so hot. Likewise, the September–October season is perfect for families.
The beaches in Crete are varied — sandy, pebbly, as well as mixed. Elafonisi Beach is very popular. It is ideal for families with children, because the entry into the water is gentle and safe, and the sand is soft and light in color.
If you want to relax on a beach with white sand and palm trees, where peace and harmony reign, then feel free to choose Vai Beach. Arriving in Heraklion, which is the capital of Crete, you can have a great time on the beach in Paleokastro. It is a fairly comfortable beach of sand and pebbles, with good reviews from tourists.
A classic holiday option in Crete is Chania, where you will find wide sandy beaches. You can meet Hollywood stars in Elounda — the hottest resort on the island, where golf courses, spas, and even helicopter pads are available. From here, stunningly beautiful views of Mirabello Bay open up.

Crete Travel Guide
Creta is the homeland of the Minotaur, the ancient gods, and simply a wonderful place for a summer holiday
Creta is an island located between Africa and the European mainland. In addition, Creta is the largest of the Greek islands.
Creta has a Mediterranean climate; the sun shines here 300 days a year, and rainy and cloudy days are usually seen only in winter. The hottest weather is in July and August.
Arriving in Creta not only for a beach holiday, you can discover a lot of new and interesting things, because this island is a “book of myths and legends of Ancient Greece”. And the first attraction you should visit in Creta is Palatul din Knossos. Have you heard of the Minotaur? So, in this palace, according to legends, this monster lived. When the Santorini volcano erupted, Palatul din Knossos was destroyed. Later, restoration works were carried out, however this difficult task could not be completed. Today you can walk through the ruins of the palace, admire the ancient frescoes, that is, enter the mythical labyrinth of the Minotaur.
After Palatul din Knossos, a must-see in Creta is the Diktaion Antron cave. In it, according to legends, Zeus, the main god of Ancient Greece, was born. The cave is very interesting and attractive: its walls and vaults are dotted with stalactites, and inside there is a real underground lake.
Next, we recommend going to Lake Voulismeni in Agios Nikolaos. It is said that the goddesses Artemis and Atena liked to swim in it. The lake is not large, but it is very deep — up to 64 metres.
Creta also has the longest gorge in Europe, Cheile Samaria. It is 18 kilometres long. To see it, you need to go to the Chania region. Besides the gorge, there are many other interesting things here, especially the local flora and fauna. Only here does the Cretan cypress grow and the kri-kri goats live. Walk through the palm forest, but be sure to have a pair of comfortable shoes with you.
Don’t miss the chance to taste Cretan cuisine, which is famous for its seafood and vegetables. We recommend visiting local restaurants where you can try delicious octopus, snails, and shrimp. If you are offered to taste Ofto (grilled lamb or goat meat) or Skafiani (lamb meat with cottage cheese), do not refuse under any circumstances — it is very tasty and unusual! And you can serve the dishes with homemade Cretan wine. We wish you a wonderful and “tasty” holiday!
