The benefits and features of a beach holiday in Santorini

The island of Santorini lies in the southern Aegean Sea. The climate is Mediterranean, with dry, hot summers and relatively mild but rainy winters. In July and August, a northerly wind blows here.

The beach season in Santorini starts in May and lasts until October. It’s recommended to come in April/May or October/November, when the sun isn’t as intense and the weather is most comfortable.

Santorini has plenty of beaches, and all are unique because they are of volcanic origin, so the sand can vary in color. There are beaches with black, red, and pink sand.

If you’re looking for a quiet, relaxing holiday, choose Columbo Beach, set in the bay near the cape of the same name. The sand here is dark gray, sometimes black.

Monolithos Beach is perfect for families with children. The entry into the sea is long and gentle, the sand is fine and soft, and there’s a playground. The downside is the wind, which can lift sand into the air and cause discomfort.

White Beach, so called because of the color of the sand and the rocks surrounding it, is especially popular with couples in love. It’s secluded, and you can reach it by boat.

Perissa is a black-sand beach known for clear water and the absence of wind. The seabed here is covered with stones, so it’s recommended to enter the water with great care.

Do I need a visa to travel to Santorini?

What currency is used in Santorini and how is it best to pay?

The official currency is the euro (EUR). You can pay by cash or bank card in most hotels, shops and restaurants. It is still a good idea to have some cash for buses, small taverns and sunbed rentals on the beach.

What plugs are used in Santorini? Do I need an adapter?

Santorini uses standard European sockets with two round pins (type C/F), 220–230V. If your devices have regular European plugs, you usually do not need an adapter.

How can I stay online in Santorini?

On arrival you can buy a local SIM card with data or use your mobile operator’s roaming package if available. Most hotels offer Wi-Fi (sometimes at an extra charge) and many cafés and taverns provide free Wi-Fi for guests.

What local transport options are there on the island?

On Santorini you can use local buses, taxis, shared and private transfers, as well as rented cars, scooters or ATVs. For beaches and sightseeing, many travellers choose shared transfers or car rental for more flexibility.

Is Santorini suitable for families with children?

Yes, there are plenty of family-friendly hotels with pools and spacious rooms. Just keep in mind that some areas have many steps and slopes, so comfortable shoes and a light stroller are very helpful.

What meal plan do you recommend in Santorini?

We usually recommend breakfast or breakfast + dinner. This gives you freedom to try different tavernas at lunchtime or in the evening, depending on your beach and excursion plans.

What can I do if the weather is bad or it rains?

On cloudy or windy days you can explore traditional villages such as Fira and Oia, visit museums, enjoy wine tastings at local wineries or have a long dinner in a taverna overlooking the caldera. Admiral Travel can suggest excursions that work well even without perfect beach weather.

Can I go snorkelling or diving in Santorini?

Yes, there are certified dive centres and snorkelling tours, especially around the volcanic beaches and the caldera. We recommend booking only with licensed operators and trusted agencies for maximum safety.

Which excursions are most popular in Santorini?

Top choices include sunset cruises in the caldera, trips to the volcano and hot springs, wine tours and photo tours through the whitewashed villages with blue domes. Many excursions can be booked in advance via Admiral Travel or directly on the spot.

What should I know about the flight ticket, luggage and check-in?

When you book, you will receive clear information about hand luggage and checked baggage allowances included in your ticket, as well as the recommended check-in time at the airport. For low-cost airlines, completing online check-in on time is essential to avoid extra fees at the airport.
