What to expect
The “Swan Castle” Neuschwanstein
Neuschwanstein is a romantic castle of Bavaria’s King Ludwig II, perched on a hill in the Alps. As a child, Ludwig dreamed of living inside a fairy-tale castle from German epic folklore, and his dream came true. Your guide will introduce you to the biography of this mysterious ruler, and you’ll also hear about Ludwig II’s unusual friendship with the composer Richard. Inside, Ludwig’s creation is dazzling — luxury is everywhere. The castle feels like a theatrical set (and partly is), since it was designed under the active guidance of Munich stage designer Christian Jank. As a result, the interiors combine different architectural and artistic styles — a mix of Moorish, Gothic, and Baroque elements. Swan motifs appear most often, inspired by Ludwig’s favorite opera, “Lohengrin”. These images are not accidental: the swan is a heraldic symbol of the royal family, and your guide will share the story behind it. You’ll step into the atmosphere of the 19th century and, for a moment, feel like an aristocrat. Interestingly, Disney drew inspiration from this castle as a prototype for the Sleeping Beauty Castle in Disneyland Paris.
The Royal Castle of Linderhof
In the second part of the tour, you’ll visit another of Ludwig II’s castles — Linderhof. It is the smallest and most “home-like” residence of the king, and also the only castle whose construction was fully completed during his lifetime. You’ll be amazed by Linderhof’s magnificent interiors, created by Europe’s finest artists. Ludwig often called it the “Residence of the Swan Prince”, while members of the royal family referred to it as the “Temple of the Sun”. The symbol of Linderhof in Bavaria is the peacock — statues of it can be found in many rooms.
You’ll also admire the refined decoration of Wieskirche, an 18th-century church built by the Zimmermann brothers, and take a walk through Bavaria’s most picturesque village, Oberammergau. You’ll hear about its architecture, painted houses, and the popular local tradition of wood carving.
Hohenschwangau Castle
Hohenschwangau Castle, built in the Neo-Gothic style, has survived to this day in its original form. Guests of the castle included the composer Richard Wagner and the storyteller Hans Christian Andersen. During the excursion, you’ll learn what connected these people from the world of art with the kings of the Wittelsbach dynasty.
Füssen or the village of Oberammergau
The town of Füssen, with its narrow streets, tiny courtyards, Baroque churches, and a beautiful monastery building, will charm lovers of old German towns. Here, time seems to hold its breath. You’ll learn why emperors favored the town, what used to be traded at the local market in the “good old days”, and inside an atmospheric pharmacy we’ll talk about the medicinal remedies of the past.
Authentic Oberammergau — a village of wood carvers, fairy-tale painted houses (“Little Red Riding Hood”, “The Big Bad Wolf”, “Cinderella”), and the Theatre of the Passion of Christ with a 300-year history. Visiting Oberammergau, you’ll find out why some locals grow their hair and beards for years, what “Lüftlmalerei” is, and where to see wall clocks with a water wheel.
