Short answer.

In September, choose Turkey or Cyprus: the sea is 27–28 °C, the sun is gentle, and there are fewer crowds. In October, for guaranteed swimming — Egypt: the Red Sea is 27–29 °C. Cyprus maintains 25–27 °C until mid-October. Turkey and Greece in October are suitable only until the 10th–15th of the month.

An autumn seaside holiday departing from Chișinău is not a matter of “luck”, but of choosing the right period. Average monthly temperatures can be misleading: in October, Turkey is “warm on average”, but after the 15th, the sea temperature can drop to 23 °C, while sunshine can give way to rain. The Admiral Travel team divides the velvet season into ten-day periods and selects destinations based on actual sea temperature, wind, and the probability of precipitation.

Below is an analysis of five destinations departing from Chișinău, based on the “September versus October” principle: specific resorts, limitations presented honestly, and indicative prices. First — sea temperatures broken down into ten-day periods, so you can immediately see where swimming is still comfortable and where there is already a risk.

The figures represent the long-term average sea temperatures at the shore. They highlight the main point: in October, the sea remains consistently warm in Egypt and Cyprus, while Turkey, Greece, and mainland Spain gradually shift toward a holiday format focused on excursions.

How to Choose a Destination for the Velvet Season

The most common mistake is choosing the country rather than the time of the month. The same Cyprus on October 5 and October 25 means two completely different holidays. Here are the five criteria we use at Admiral Travel when choosing a holiday departing from Chișinău.

  • 1. Water temperature. For a beach holiday, the benchmark is 25 °C and above. For adults, 24 °C is a comfortable temperature, while for children, a temperature of 25 °C or higher is recommended.
  • 2. Wind and waves. In Cyprus, the wind often picks up in the afternoon in October, while the waters around Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh are noticeably calmer.
  • 3. Rainfall. In Turkey and Greece, short but heavy showers are typical after October 15.
  • 4. Type of holiday. A beach holiday with children, diving, car rental, or excursions — there is a suitable country for every type of holiday.
  • 5. Budget. In October, prices are usually 10–25 % lower than in September. The exception is Egypt: demand increases here as November approaches.

Where to Go During the Velvet Season

Turkey

Antalya, Kemer, Belek, and Bodrum are classic velvet-season destinations, suitable for families and affordable holidays. In September, the air temperature on the Antalya coast reaches 29–31 °C, the sea reaches 27–28 °C, and evenings are warm. The first half of October is still comfortable: air temperatures range from 24–27 °C, while the water is 25–26 °C. After that, cooling begins: after October 15, the risk of rain increases, and the water temperature drops to 23–25 °C.

Who is it suitable for:

  • families with children, those who appreciate a quality all-inclusive system, as well as those looking for a short flight from Chișinău and well-developed hotel infrastructure.

Who is it not suitable for:

  • those who want guaranteed daily swimming in the sea in October. We do not recommend planning a beach holiday in Turkey after October 15 if warm sea water is the main requirement. For this, Egypt or Cyprus until around the 20th are safer options.

You can choose a hotel and specific dates in the tours to Turkey section.

Greece

Crete, Rhodes, and Kos are the best choices in September if you want to combine beach time with history and gastronomy. In September, the sea is 25–27 °C, the air on the islands is 27–29 °C, and the evenings are pleasant. October in Greece is already a transitional period: rain and wind become more frequent, while the water temperature drops to 22–25 °C. Beach holidays after October 10–15 become a gamble.

Who is it suitable for:

  • couples, groups of adults, and those passionate about archaeology and authentic cuisine.

Who is it not suitable for:

  • families with young children in October and those traveling solely for the sea in the second half of October. Greece during this period is more about excursions than swimming.

September in Crete and Rhodes is one of the most balanced periods in the Mediterranean. See the available options on the holidays in Greece page.

Cyprus

Cyprus is the champion when it comes to the length of the swimming season in the Mediterranean. In September, Limassol, Paphos, Ayia Napa, and Protaras maintain water temperatures of 27–28 °C. In October, the sea is still 25–27 °C, and swimming remains comfortable until around the 20th. Towards the end of October, the water temperature drops to 24–25 °C, while evenings become cool: 17–19 °C.

Who is it suitable for:

  • families with children, couples, and those planning to rent a car and explore the island.

Who is it not suitable for:

  • those who feel cold easily and want warm weather after October 25. Towards the end of the month, evenings no longer feel like summer, and the possibility of swimming during the day depends on the specific day and the wind.

For a family holiday in September and the first half of October, this is one of the most predictable options. Hotel offers and early booking conditions are available in the tours to Cyprus section.

Egypt

Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, and Marsa Alam are the only destinations on the list where the Red Sea remains warm throughout the year. In September, the water is 28–30 °C, but it is very hot on land: 33–36 °C. October is more comfortable: the air is 29–32 °C, the water is 27–29 °C, the heat becomes less intense, and the sea remains ideal for snorkeling and diving.

Who is it suitable for:

  • those who need guaranteed warm sea water in October, coral reef enthusiasts, and divers.

Who is it not suitable for:

  • those who cannot tolerate the heat in September and those planning long excursions to Luxor or Cairo in the first half of autumn. September in Egypt means beach and pool time, not hours of walking in archaeological sites outdoors.

In October, Egypt is the safest answer to the question “where can you swim if the season has already ended in Europe?” You can check prices and hotels in the tours to Egypt section.

Spain

Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca offer water temperatures of 24–25 °C and air temperatures of 27–29 °C in September — an excellent format for a beach holiday without oppressive heat. In October, mainland Spain no longer guarantees suitable swimming conditions: the water is 20–23 °C, and the sky is often cloudy. The exception is the Canary Islands: Tenerife and Gran Canaria maintain 22–24 °C even in October.

Destination image: Spain

Who is it suitable for:

  • couples, gastronomy and urban walking enthusiasts, as well as those prepared to combine beach time with excursions.

Who is it not suitable for:

  • those traveling to mainland Spain in October specifically for a beach holiday. Costa del Sol after October 15 is beautiful, delicious, and full of atmosphere, but it is not suitable for daily swimming.

For seaside holidays in September and city breaks in October, options are presented on the holidays in Spain page.
