Malta guide
The ancient Greeks called this island Melita, which can be translated as "Sweet honey". And still speaking about Malta, the tourists who visited it characterize the country as "heaven on earth." Why is that?
This picturesque country is located on three islands in the Mediterranean Sea. They are 93 km from Sicily and 288 km from Tunisia. This is an archipelago that unites the islands of Malta, Gozo (Gozo) and Camino, on which people live, and a few uninhabited ones. In terms of area (only 316 km²), Malta is in 185th place in the world.
The island of Malta itself is 27 km long and 15 km wide. Gozo has half the area, Camino is only 2 km long.
But, despite the microscopic size, this is such a blessed land that for many hundreds of years there was a fierce struggle for the right to own it. At first, the Phoenicians ruled here. Then there are the ancient Greeks. After them were the same ancient Romans, Carthaginians, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Spaniards. In 1530, the Emperor of Rome, Charles V, presented the archipelago to the Order of the Hospitallers of Malta (St. John's). These are the knights who captured Jerusalem during the First Crusade in 1099 and after many centuries defended and cared for the Holy Land. In the 16th century they founded the capital of Malta - the fortress-port of Valletta, designed to protect the island.
In the future, history developed in such a way that Napoleon ruled the islands for six days. Then, for some time, Russia exercised a protectorate over them. And then for 150 years Malta became a British colony, getting rid of this status only in 1974.
Since 2004 Malta has been part of the European Union. The only currency for settlements is the euro.
The climate of the archipelago is ideal for beach lovers. Summers are dry and hot, with August temperatures reaching 28–34 °C. It often rains in winter, during the day the thermometer shows 12 to 20 ° C, at night + 7-12.
Beach tourists are attracted by the sea with the clearest water, the variety of beaches that are considered among the best in the EU, and even the sand. He is here he comes in three colors - white, red and pink. Some of the beaches are marked with the Blue Flag.
You should know that most of the beaches are rocky, they require special shoes. But they have the cleanest water. Shoes are also needed due to the fact that sea urchins are found in some places. The best sandy beaches of Malta are located in the north of the island.
The beauty of the sea flows under the water, there is a breathtaking bottom and diverse fauna, which attracts numerous divers from all over the world to Malta.
The archipelago is ready to offer its hospitality to any tourist. There are many hotels of both premium and budget class segments on the islands, there are hostels. The 5-star Radisson Golden Sands will proudly tell you that Queen Elizabeth II once stayed there during her stay on the island.
Features of nutrition: in Malta they do not practice the "all inclusive" mode. Most often, the guest will be offered breakfast and lunch included in the price. But even in the evening he will not remain hungry, there are a huge number of catering establishments for every taste, including 26 restaurants included in the Michelin guide.
Authentic Maltese cuisine reflects the turbulent history of these lands and has absorbed the culinary traditions of Italy (especially Sicily), Great Britain, Spain, Greece, France and Mauritius. For the preparation of national dishes, fresh seafood, fish, meat (rabbit, beef, pork, chicken), fruits and vegetables, cereals and olive oil are most often used. Most often they are baked or stewed, so this cuisine is also healthy.
You can move around the islands of the archipelago by buses, taxis, rental cars and ferries.

What to see: history, forts, and iconic spots
Across all three islands there are quite a few attractive sights, most of them connected to history.
- Palatul Marelui Maestru (Valletta). It is a fort built from light-colored stone. In the Middle Ages, this was the residence of the leaders of Ordinului Maltei.
- Grădinile Barrakka (Valletta), considered the most visited attraction in the city. Exotic plants grow in tiers here, among statues and medieval towers. From the lookout you can see the bay and three cities din Malta.
- Fort Manoel (Gzira). A cyclopean structure built in secolul XVIII; today it has become a film pavilion — a set where the series „Urzeala Tronurilor” was filmed.
- Muzeul Torturii (Mdina). A unique 18+ place, not for the faint-hearted. It contains a collection of torture instruments, plus illustrative examples of how they were used on blood-covered mannequins.
- Catedrala Sfântul Ioan (Valletta). Officially, the Hospitallers were called Ordinul Sfântul Ioan de Ierusalim. Right after arriving pe Malta, the knights began building the cathedral dedicated to their patron. It is a vivid example of excellent Italian Baroque from secolelor XVI-XVII.
- Insula Gozo: fereastră azurie (an arch in a massive rock — a cult spot for „selfie pentru memorie” lovers). Temple megalitice Ggantija, built approximately in anul 3500 î.e.n. Muzeu de arheologie, turnuri de gardă.
- Grădina Botanică Sf. Antonio, where Christmas visitors are gifted oranges grown right here.
