Travel Guide to Madrid
Madrid’s legendary markets and museums are waiting for you: visit one of the largest cities in Europe!
Madrid is the capital of Spain and the largest city in the country, as well as the third-largest city in the European Union.
Walking the streets of Madrid and admiring its buildings, you’ll notice a subtle resemblance to the architecture of another European capital — Paris. Madrid can certainly be called one of Europe’s main cultural capitals.
Madrid has a continental climate: summers are hot and dry, winters are cool, sometimes with snow, yet the air temperature almost never drops below zero.
It is believed that the best time to visit Madrid is the shoulder season — the spring and autumn months. And it’s all because of the climate, because it gets very hot here in summer and cold in winter.
Once you arrive in Madrid, you simply can’t miss its main attractions — and there are many of them here. You can start with a walk through Puerta del Sol Square. This is not only one of the most famous squares in Spain’s capital, but also the busiest place in the city. Here you’ll find a plaque marking „Kilometer Zero”, the center of Spain’s road network.
Don’t pass by the main symbol of Spain’s capital — a sculpture of a bear with a fruit tree. Visit the Royal Palace; this is probably Madrid’s main attraction. It was built in the 18th century, and its architecture closely resembles Versailles. The palace is not the king’s residence; it hosts various ceremonies and official events.
The main church of Spain’s capital is the Cathedral. An interesting fact: it was built on the site where a mosque once stood.
One of Spain’s main tourist streets is located in Madrid and is called Gran Vía. It was built right at the beginning of the last century. On this street you will find plenty of shops, restaurants, and clubs.
In the eastern part of Madrid you’ll find Las Ventas, the arena where bullfights took place. The arena was built of red brick in the 1940s and can accommodate 24.000 people.
While you are in Madrid, take a walk through Retiro, the largest and most famous park in Spain’s capital. It is located near the city’s historic center.
In fact, there are many places in Madrid that are recommended to visit; the list can be quite long, and telling the story of them — even longer. The stadium of the football club Real Madrid Santiago Bernabeu, the Prado Museum, the monument to Don Quijote, the Alcalá Gate, a large number of squares and palaces we didn’t mention, all have invaluable cultural significance. All this awaits you in Madrid — you can book a tour to this wonderful city right now!
